The introductory text to the catalogue sets forth the doctrine on realism professed by Gustave COURBET (1819-1877), and is followed by an inventory of 1,500 paintings, including a small selection executed in collaboration with his students. The chronological listing of paintings, accompanied by introductory biographical paragraphs, is followed by that of drawings, sketchbooks and the rare sculptures executed by the painter, proof of his interest in a discipline other than his own. Bibliography, index and maps conclude the work, which is also enriched by period photographs.

A new revised and supplemented edition is being prepared under the supervision of Jean-Jacques Fernier who has been pursuing his father’s research for the catalogue since 1977 as well as the latter’s commitment to the Museum and to the Courbet Institute at Ornans (France).
