Gérard

Born in Rome, François GÉRARD (1770-1837) arrived in Paris to work in the studio of David in 1786 (having first studied with the sculptor Pajou), only becoming successful when he began to work for Bonaparte. Having been the portraitist of the Emperor, the Imperial Family and the Court, Gérard continued to pursue his career under Louis XVIII, who named him his official painter and ennobled him. His company was as sought after as his work and his Salon was frequented by the most prominent personalities of the day.
