The two volumes list the art of Édouard MANET (1832-1883). The first focuses on his biography— supplemented by a genealogical tree and a chronological chart—and on the catalogue of 546 paintings and pastels chronologically classified. The second comprises reproductions of the catalogued works, where portraits and still lifes are seen alongside landscapes and genre scenes.

Each reproduction is the object of extensive notes, and the whole completed by various annexes: a list of exhibitions, a bibliography, an index of titles and proper names, and a topographical index.
