Robert

An artist who produced paintings, drawings, engravings and decorative works, Hubert ROBERT (1733-1808)  began his long career in Italy, which he visited in the company of Fragonard. It was there that he discovered the complex art of Giovanni Paolo Pannini, whose architecture and paintings inspired by Antiquity would have a defining influence on his work. When he returned to France, he popularized paintings of ruins where he smoothly blended fantasy and melancholy. As skilful at executing works of imposing dimensions as he was at miniatures, Hubert Robert was a major landscape painter. An impressive number of these works will be included in the critical catalogue in preparation, an innovative, large-scale undertaking headed by Guy Wildenstein and Joseph Baillio.
