Van Dongen

A French painter of Dutch origin, Kees VAN DONGEN (1877-1968), arrived in Paris in 1897, moving into the "Bateau-Lavoir" in 1906 and becoming involved in the fauve movement. His landscapes, scenes of Parisian life—featuring both members of polite society and the demi-monde—and his portraits of outrageously made-up women, reveal a pitiless observer. The richness of his sources of inspiration, the variety of genres he practiced, and the boldness of his chromatic harmonies make Van Dongen as singular an artist as he is intriguing. The catalogue, under the direction of Jacques Chalom des Cordes, will bring together many works, irrespective of technique, with the exception of engravings.
